JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi State Board of Education approved today $3 million in summer reading grants for 24 schools over the next three years to support their efforts in helping struggling students.
The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) through the Office of Elementary Education and Reading used a competitive request for proposals selection process to award the grants. The grants will be used for summer reading camps. The Literacy-Based Promotion Act states that schools should provide students who are not promoted with intensive instructional services, progress monitoring measures, and supports to remediate the identified areas of reading deficiency, as outlined in the student's individual reading plan. Other strategies provided by the school district may include summer reading.
“These grants will help schools continue to provide supports for students that are struggling in the area of literacy in schools across the state,” said Dr. Nathan Oakley, chief academic officer.
