Mississippi Schools, Districts Continue to Show Improvement

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) today officially released letter grades for schools and districts, showing more districts earning an “A” and fewer districts earning an “F” for the third consecutive year.  The Mississippi Board of Education is expected to approve the 2013 accountability results at its meeting today.

The accountability model measures student performance on rigorous curricula and assessments.  Schools and districts received performance classification letter grades of “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” and “F.”

State Board Votes to Ask Governor to Declare States of Emergency in Claiborne, Leflore Districts

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education (MBE) determined that an extreme emergency situation exists in the Claiborne County School District and Leflore County School District. The Board decided to grant the Yazoo City Municipal School District a delay in the transformation of the Yazoo City High School into a new start school until March 2014, contingent on certain conditions.

State Board Names New State Superintendent of Education

JACKSON, Miss. – Today the Mississippi Board of Education named Dr. Carey Wright, founder and CEO of Wright Approach Consulting in Maryland and a 36-year veteran administrator and teacher, as the new state superintendent of education.

Wright will lead the Mississippi Department of Education, effective Nov. 1. The selection came after the Board interviewed five finalists on Sept. 24 from a list of 11 semi-finalists from several states, including Georgia, Massachusetts, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

School Bus Safety Week Encourages Drivers, Students to be Aware

JACKSON, Miss. – The week of October 21-25 is National School Bus Safety Week. This event, sponsored by the National Association of Pupil Transportation, is a worthy endeavor and deserves attention here in Mississippi. This year’s theme “Stand Back from the Yellow and Black” encourages critical feedback from students and promotes an awareness of the loading and unloading of school buses safely.

MDE Recognizes Schools for Closing Achievement Gap, Student Performance

WHO: The Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Federal Programs

WHAT: The MDE will recognize and award more than 35 Title 1 schools from across the state for their work in closing the achievement gap and improving student academic performance during the “Champions of Change” ceremony. In a surprise announcement, two of the schools will be notified at the meeting that they will receive national recognition for their efforts.

WHEN: Friday, Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m.
