MDE Recognizes Schools’ Academic Achievement, Progress in 2nd Annual “Champions of Change” Event

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) honored 57 schools Friday for academic achievement or progress during a ceremony at the Central High School Building. MDE staff recognized schools that have earned the title of High Progress, Gold Ribbon, High Performing or Distinguished under federal Title 1 guidelines as “Champions of Change.”

“I am pleased that Gov. Bryant supports higher academic standards for Mississippi’s students. Over the past three years, the Mississippi Department of Education has been providing professional development to educators across the state in preparation for higher standards. School districts have developed the curriculum around Common Core State Standards and have implemented these more rigorous learning goals in classrooms. The federal government hasn’t done any of that. Our teachers and school leaders across the state have done the hard work to make this happen.”

Mississippi received an “A” in accountability, assessments and standards. I believe this grade validates the work of the Mississippi Board of Education, Mississippi Department of Education and legislative and elected leaders over the last few years to increase accountability and to challenge students academically through the adoption and implementation of Common Core State Standards.

Mississippi Students Selected for U.S. Senate Youth Program, Receive Scholarship

JACKSON, Miss. – Senators Thad Cochran and Roger F. Wicker today announced the names of the two Mississippi students who have been selected as delegates to the 52nd annual U. S. Senate Youth Program (USSYP) that will be held March 8 – 15, 2014 in Washington, D.C. Luke Kelly of Moss Point and John “Peyton” Kyle of Nesbit were chosen from across the state to be part of the group of 104 student delegates who will attend the program’s Washington Week.
