2012 State test scores released: Graduation rate, MCT2 results on the rise

Jackson, Miss. – The results released Wednesday by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), students across the state increased Mississippi Curriculum Test, Second Edition (MCT2) scores in every grade tested. The MCT2 is given to students in grades 3 through 8 in Language Arts and Mathematics. The MCT2 was first implemented in 2007-08 to assess the state's more rigorous curriculum standards for language arts and mathematics. Districts also showed a two percent increase in graduation rates, rising to 73.7%. Dropout rates also dropped slightly to 16.7%.

Gulfport Businessman Named to Commission on School Accreditation

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education (MBE) has appointed Anthony Montgomery, a senior vice president at Hancock Bank in Gulfport, to fill an unexpired term on the Commission on School Accreditation. He will complete the 2009-2013 term, replacing Kevin Eubank, who resigned.

A graduate of the University of Mississippi, Montgomery completed graduate studies at Ole Miss and Louisiana State University. He currently is the training specialist for credit risk management and consumer lending.

Oxford Teacher Named to Commission on School Accreditation

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education (MBE) has appointed John Paul Mistilis, a teacher at Oxford High School, to fill an unexpired term on the Commission on School Accreditation. He will complete the 2009-2013 term, replacing Susan Burchfield, who retired.

A graduate of the University of Mississippi, Mistilis has taught for nine years in public schools in Tate County, Water Valley and Oxford. He currently teaches U.S. history and AP macroeconomics.

Commission on School Accreditation Sets Special-Called Teleconference Meeting

WHO: Commission on School Accreditation

WHAT: A special-called teleconference meeting of the Commission will be held to determine if an extreme emergency situation exists that jeopardizes the safety, security and educational interests of the children enrolled in the Oktibbeha County School District.

WHEN: Thursday, Sept. 27 at 10 a.m.

Mississippi Board of Education Votes to Ask Governor to Declare State of Emergency

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education (MBE) determined that an extreme emergency situation exists in the Oktibbeha County School District. Acting on a recommendation from the Mississippi Commission on School Accreditation, the MBE voted unanimously to ask Gov. Phil Bryant to declare a state of emergency for the school district. 

Sargent to Meet with Oktibbeha County School District Community

MBE Grants JPS an Extension on Withdrawal of Accreditation, Contingent upon Certain Conditions

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education (MBE) voted today to grant Jackson Public Schools (JPS) an extension until June 30, 2013 to come into full compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) before the withdrawal of accreditation if the district agrees  to criteria outlined in a proposed agreement.

School Bus Safety Task Force to Announce School Bus Safety Week

WHO:  Dr. Ben Burnett, Lamar County School District Superintendent and Chairman of the School Bus Safety Task Force, Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Johnny Poulos, and Andy and Lori Key, parents of Nathan Key. Gov. Phil Bryant will make brief remarks.

WHAT:  School Bus Safety Week will be announced. In Mississippi, around 5,400 school buses transport more than 450,000 students to and from school annually. That adds up to 54 million miles each year.
