Oak Grove High School Special Education Teacher Selected as 2012 Mississippi Teacher of the Year

Jackson, Miss – Stacey Todd, a special education teacher from Oak Grove High School, is Mississippi’s 2012 Teacher of the Year. Todd was chosen from four finalists Friday at a luncheon held in Jackson. The Mississippi Teacher of the Year program is sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Education and the Mississippi Teacher Center.

Four Mississippi public school students named semifinalists in 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

Jackson, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education would like to recognize four public, high school seniors chosen as semifinalists for the 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. These are four of only 550 semifinalists chosen from across the country.

Pass Christian Superintendent, Dr. Sue Matheson, steps down from Mississippi Board of Education post

Jackson, Miss. – Life long educator and Pass Christian Superintendent, Dr. Sue Matheson will relinquish her post on the Mississippi Board of Education effective May 31.  Dr. Matheson has served on the Board of Education for nearly three years having accepted an appointment from Governor Haley Barbour.

State Board of Education selects Dr. Lynn House as Interim State Superintendent of Education

Jackson, Miss. – The State Board of Education announced Thursday its intent to name Dr. Lynn House as Interim State Superintendent of Education.  State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tom Burnham will retire June 30th.  Currently, Dr. House serves as Deputy State Superintendent in charge of Instructional Enhancement and Internal Operations at the Mississippi Department of Education.

State Board of Education takes initial step to reconstitute Okolona School District

Jackson, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education voted Friday to take the first step to reconstitute the Okolona School District essentially giving the district back to the community.

“I am so elated this day has arrived,” said State Superintendent, Dr. Tom Burnham. “This is why we have this tool in place, to improve the school district and return it back to the community in better shape.

Sale Elementary Principal, Nancy Bragg, named Administrator of the Year

Jackson, Miss, - Nancy Bragg, principal at Sale Elementary School in the Columbus Municipal School District, is Mississippi’s 2012 Administrator of the Year. Bragg was chosen from four finalists Friday at the Mississippi Board of Education meeting in Jackson.

Bragg knew she wanted to be an educator from her junior year in high school and has dedicated 31 years of her life to this pursuit, the last ten years at Sale Elementary.  Bragg’s goal for her school is simple; she wants her students to stack up against any students in the country.

Three districts pilot Excellence for All program in Mississippi

Jackson, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) released Wednesday the scores from state assessments from the 2011-2012 school year along with the more recent graduation and dropout rates for the entire state. While most school districts across Mississippi are teaching similar curriculum, there are three districts that have chosen to teach an innovative alternative pilot program offered in Mississippi for the first time in 2011.
