Pass Christian Superintendent, Dr. Sue Matheson, steps down from Mississippi Board of Education post

May 16, 2012

Jackson, Miss. – Life long educator and Pass Christian Superintendent, Dr. Sue Matheson will relinquish her post on the Mississippi Board of Education effective May 31.  Dr. Matheson has served on the Board of Education for nearly three years having accepted an appointment from Governor Haley Barbour.

“Dr. Matheson has touched the lives of thousands of students beyond the Pass Christian School District through her service on the Mississippi Board of Education,” said Tom Burnham, State Superintendent of Education.  “As a State Board Member, she has devoted her life to developing policies to ensure all publicly educated children receive the resources needed to obtain a quality education,” Burnham added.

Dr. Matheson has lead the Pass Christian School District for ten years. During this time, her schools and district have won numerous awards for academic achievement including the distinction of Mississippi’s highest level of performance (Star District) for three consecutive years.

“Not only have the children of Pass Christian and Mississippi benefitted from the leadership of Dr. Matheson, but she has brought a great deal of knowledge to the State Board as a practicing administrator.  We have worked together to raise the academic attainment in our underperforming schools and have worked to develop policies that will lead to bigger and better opportunities for our young people,” said Charles McClelland, Chairman, Mississippi Board of Education.

Dr. Matheson served on the State Board as the school administrator member. She will retire as superintendent of Pass Christian Schools at the end of May. Governor Bryant recently appointed Assistant Superintendent of Education for Rankin County Schools, Richard Morrison to serve the unexpired term.  Morrison begins his service in June.
