MDE Releases Information on Special Needs Scholarship Program

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education released today information for parents of students with disabilities who want to participate in the special needs scholarship program. Applications will be released and accepted beginning July 1 when the law becomes effective.

The application window is July 1-10 to ensure parents are notified of their application status before school starts in August.

JACKSON, Miss. – “I would like to provide clarity around the Education Scholarship Account application process. The purpose of the July 1-10 window is to expedite the enrollment process so that eligible children can receive the benefit of the scholarship as early as possible. The MDE wanted parents to know, prior to the start of school, the status of their applications. Based on our staff and resources, we had to prepare for the possibility of more than 400 application submissions.

MDE Launches Online Public Comment Forum for Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards

JACKSON, Miss. – In keeping with the periodic review process of academic standards, the Mississippi Department of Education announced today that it is seeking specific input on the English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics standards through a process called the Mississippi College- and Career-Ready Standards (MCCRS) Feedback Forum.

Statewide Kindergarten Readiness Assessment Reveals Impact of Pre-K

JACKSON, Miss. – The fall 2016 results of Mississippi’s statewide assessment of kindergarten readiness show that students who attended public or private pre-K programs were more likely to start school prepared to learn than students who did not.  

The Kindergarten Readiness Assessment evaluates skills such as the ability to recognize letters and match letters to their sounds and a student’s recognition that print flows from left to right.

WHAT: The CSA will consider approving the 2016-17 accountability grades and assign accreditation statuses for school districts during its regularly scheduled meeting. Note: The CSA will not make a decision regarding changing the current accreditation status of the Jackson Public School District during this meeting.

MDE Announces 2nd Annual “Celebration of Excellence” Tour to Recognize District Achievements

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) announced Monday a schedule of visits to recognize the achievements of all “A” districts. District leaders and school board members will join Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education, at each location to thank teachers and students for their hard work.

Five new school districts earned an “A” rating for the 2016-17 school year. They are Lamar County School District, Poplarville School District, Union County School District, Pearl Public School District and Newton County Schools.

In November and December, I will visit every A-rated school district in Mississippi. My visits are part of the second annual “Celebration of Excellence” tour to recognize district achievements. During each celebration, I will join district leaders and school board members to thank teachers and students for their hard work.

We initiated the “Celebration of Excellence” tour last year to applaud school districts that completed the school year at the top of their class. It is not easy to earn an A.
