State Board Approves Statewide Assessment Contract for New Science, U.S. History Tests

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: May 17, 2018

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi Board of Education voted today to approve a $3.3 million statewide testing contract with Data Recognition Corp (DRC) for the 2018-19 school year to administer 5th and 8th grade science assessments and the Biology I and U.S. History assessments for high school. The science tests are required by federal law.

JACKSON, Miss. – Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education, announced today she will convene the first Mississippi Student Testing Task Force to examine current student testing on the state and local school district levels and to determine best practices for monitoring student progress in meeting grade-level and subject area learning goals.

JACKSON, Miss – During statewide testing today, some Mississippi testing sites experienced intermittent connectivity at some point between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Online testing resumed and was fully functionally at approximately 10 a.m.

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) has provided guidance to districts to ensure that affected students are provided with adequate time to complete tests that were interrupted.

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi showed a significant increase in 8th grade Reading on the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) compared to 2015 scores, tying with Washington state for the greatest gain of 4.4 points in average score on the Nation’s Report Card.

JACKSON, Miss. – “I would like to provide clarity around the Education Scholarship Account application process. The purpose of the July 1-10 window is to expedite the enrollment process so that eligible children can receive the benefit of the scholarship as early as possible. The MDE wanted parents to know, prior to the start of school, the status of their applications. Based on our staff and resources, we had to prepare for the possibility of more than 400 application submissions.
