MDE Seeks Sponsors for 2018 Summer Food Program

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is seeking sponsors to operate the 2018 Summer Food Service Program in counties across the state. This program is administered by the MDE Office of Child Nutrition.

The Summer Food Service Program provides nutritious meals to children without regard to race, color, national origin, age (within statutory limits), sex, or disability during summer school vacation periods.  In most areas, the program operates from June through August. 

MDE Announces School Winners of Attendance Awareness Competition

JACKSON, Miss. – The Office of Compulsory School Attendance in the Mississippi Department of Education announced today the winners of its “Strive for Less Than Five attendance awareness campaign competition. The goal of the statewide competition was to encourage students to not miss school more than five days and to raise awareness of the long-term effects that missing school has on educational development.

MDE Seeks Public Comments on Waiver to Law Limiting Alternate Assessments

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is seeking public comment on its request for a waiver on the number of students who can be tested using an alternate assessment on the annual statewide Mississippi Academic Assessment Program-Alternate (MAAP-A), based on the number of students who have taken the alternate assessment in the past.

Western Line, Petal and Corinth School Districts Lead the State for Kindergarten Readiness

JACKSON, Miss. – Kindergarten students in Western Line, Petal and Corinth school districts earned the highest average scores on the fall 2017 Kindergarten Readiness Assessment thanks to the districts’ efforts to strengthen pre-K programs in their communities. 

Kindergartners in all three districts exceeded the fall target score of 530 that demonstrates kindergarten readiness. Western Line students earned an average score of 574, Petal students averaged 564, and Corinth student averaged 557. 

State Board of Education Delays Decision on Achievement School District

December 14, 2017

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) voted today to delay its decision on whether to include the Humphreys County and Noxubee County school districts in the state’s first Achievement School District (ASD) until the superintendent of the ASD is hired. The first ASD will launch in the 2018-19 school year.
