School Districts Put the Spotlight on Literacy in Preparation for 3rd Grade Testing, Success in the Classroom

JACKSON, Miss. – Expanded reading times, reading intervention for struggling students, parent meetings and community support for literacy are all ways school districts have worked to prepare students and parents for the first administration of the 3rd Grade Reading Summative Assessment. Students in 3rd grade across the state will take the assessment for the first time beginning Friday.
State Board Approves Statewide Assessment Contract with Questar Assessment Inc.

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education voted today to approve a 10-year, $110.9 million statewide testing contract with Questar Assessment Inc., beginning in the 2015-16 school year. The cost for the first year of the contract is up to $13.3 million.

Number of Literacy Coaches Surpasses State Goal

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education has surpassed the state’s goal to hire 75 literacy coaches, with 78 literacy staff recruited to support schools statewide. The Mississippi Board of Education is expected to approve contracts for the additional literacy coaches on Friday.
Mississippi Teacher, Administrator of the Year Will Be Announced Thursday

Mississippi’s Early College High School Selects First Class

JACKSON, Miss. – Sixty-two students from around Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee and Oktibbeha counties have been selected to be part of a new regional high school’s inaugural class.
The Golden Triangle Early College High School (GTECHS) – a partnership of the Mississippi Department of Education, East Mississippi Community College and Mississippi State University – will provide opportunities for students to earn college credit while earning a high school diploma at the same time.
