School Districts Put the Spotlight on Literacy in Preparation for 3rd Grade Testing, Success in the Classroom

JACKSON, Miss. – Expanded reading times, reading intervention for struggling students, parent meetings and community support for literacy are all ways school districts have worked to prepare students and parents for the first administration of the 3rd Grade Reading Summative Assessment. Students in 3rd grade across the state will take the assessment for the first time beginning Friday.

Mississippi Teacher, Administrator of the Year Will Be Announced Thursday

WHO: The Mississippi Department of Education and the Mississippi Teacher Center will announce the 2015 Mississippi Teacher of the Year (MTOY) and the Mississippi Administrator of the Year (MAOY) at an annual luncheon. Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education, is scheduled to speak, as well as national education author Dr. Todd Whitaker.

Mississippi’s Early College High School Selects First Class

JACKSON, Miss. – Sixty-two students from around Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee and Oktibbeha counties have been selected to be part of a new regional high school’s inaugural class.

The Golden Triangle Early College High School (GTECHS) – a partnership of the Mississippi Department of Education, East Mississippi Community College and Mississippi State University – will provide opportunities for students to earn college credit while earning a high school diploma at the same time.
