Mississippi Students Named Top Youth Volunteers in the Nation

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi students Katie Rogers of Collins and Shields Haire of Tupelo are among 102 students named the nation’s top youth volunteers through the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. The Mississippi students will each receive $1,000 and travel to Washington, D.C., in May for four days of national recognition events. During the trip, 10 of the honorees will be selected as America’s top youth volunteers of 2015.

3rd Grade Reading Test Blueprint and Sample Questions Available

JACKSON, Miss. – Starting in the 2014-2015 school year, Mississippi’s Literacy-Based Promotion Act requires 3rd grade students to read at or above grade level in order to be promoted to 4th grade. Under the law, a student scoring at the lowest achievement level on the 3rd Grade Reading Summative Assessment will be retained in 3rd grade, unless the student meets the good cause exemptions for promotion as specified in the law.

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education and the Mississippi Department of Education stated publicly that we were committed to an open and transparent bid process for the multi-year contract for statewide testing of students. That commitment has not changed despite rampant misinformation to the contrary.

State Board Approves Waivers, Provides Guidance on School District Inclement Weather Closures

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education (Board) approved waiver requests for some districts that closed school because of extreme weather conditions over the last few weeks. The Board also approved guidelines for school districts that requested exemptions from make-up days or planned to change their school calendar.

MDE Recognizes 51 Schools for Academic Progress, Closing Achievement Gap

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), Offices of Federal Programs and Special Education recognized 51 schools for academic achievement or progress during a ceremony today at the Central High School Building. Schools that earned the title of High Progress, High Performing, Exemplary Inclusion and/or Title I Distinguished under federal Title I guidelines were honored as "Champions of Change."
