Accountability Letter Grades to be Released in October

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education will release school district letter grades for the 2013-14 school year following the October 17 Board of Education meeting.

This year’s letter grades are based on Mississippi’s new accountability model, which will show how schools and districts performed after implementing the state’s new, more rigorous college- and career-ready standards.

Literacy is an Important Part of Education

Being a good reader is critical to success in school. That’s why Mississippi’s youngest students started this school year with classes that provide a greater emphasis on literacy.

This effort is part of the Literacy-Based Promotion Act, which Gov. Phil Bryant signed into law in 2013. The act establishes a path to ensure every child in Mississippi enters fourth grade as a competent reader.

Along with expanding access to quality early childhood education programs, this plan is necessary for the futures of our children.

Caledonia Elementary Named 2014 National Blue Ribbon School

JACKSON, Miss. – Caledonia Elementary in the Lowndes County School District was selected as a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The designation makes it one of 337 schools recognized by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan for their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

Mississippi Schools Graded According to New Accountability System and U.S. Department of Education Waiver

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education today released letter grades for schools and districts based on Mississippi’s new accountability system, which evaluates how schools and districts performed after implementing the state’s more rigorous college- and career-ready standards.

Statewide Kindergarten Assessment Reveals Majority of Students Enter School Unprepared

JACKSON, Miss. – The results of Mississippi’s first statewide assessment of Kindergarten readiness reveal that two-thirds of the state’s youngest learners enter school unprepared to learn.

More than 40,000 Kindergarteners from 144 districts throughout the state took the STAR Early Literacy exam during the first month of the 2014-15 school year. More than 65% of students scored below the 530 benchmark score that indicates a student has mastered at least 70% of early reading skills. The state average score was 501.

State Board of Education Reschedules November Meeting

December 5, 2014

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education has rescheduled its monthly meeting originally set for November 20-21. The Board’s work session and meeting is now a one-day meeting on Wednesday, November 12.

The Board’s work session will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the 4th floor boardroom in the Central High School building. The meeting will immediately follow the work session.
