Mississippi Early Childhood Conference Set for July in Natchez

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Head Start Association, in conjunction with sponsoring partners, the Mississippi Department of Education, the Mississippi Department of Human Services, the Center for Enhancing Early Learning Outcomes, the Alliance for Early Success, and the Council of Chief State School Officers is pleased to announce the 2014 Mississippi Early Childhood Conference. The conference is scheduled for July 21-23 at the Natchez Convention Center.

JACKSON, Miss. –I am deeply concerned by media reports of U.S. senatorial candidate Chris McDaniel’s support for abolishing the U.S. Department of Education and eliminating nearly $800 million in federal funding from our Mississippi schools.
I would rather not become a part of any political battle between candidates for office. However, the serious nature of these statements by state Sen. McDaniel leaves me no reasonable choice but to speak up on behalf of the students in our public schools.
State Board of Education Reschedules July Meeting

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education has rescheduled its monthly meeting set for July 17-18. The Board’s work session and meeting is now a one-day meeting on Wednesday, July 23.
The Board’s work session will begin at 9 a.m. in the 4th floor boardroom in the Central High School building, and the meeting will immediately follow the work session.
Ocean Springs Resident Named 2014 Parent of the Year

JACKSON, Miss. – Jane Howard Moore, mother of three students in the Ocean Springs School District, was named the 2014 Parent of the Year.
Moore has been heavily involved in the Ocean Springs schools and community, and she said her main desire is to support the needs of children and to foster greater parent and community participation in all levels of primary education.
Commission on School Accreditation Votes to Postpone Discussion of Greenwood School District

JACKSON, Miss. – The Commission on School Accreditation voted today to postpone the discussion of the need to declare a state of emergency in the Greenwood School District to 9 a.m. Thursday, July 31.
The vote followed the Greenwood School District’s request to delay the discussion at least 10 days.
Mississippi Board of Education appoints new chairman

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education today appointed Dr. John R. Kelly to serve as Board chairman for a two-year term.
Kelly, who since 2007 has served as Gulfport’s chief administrative officer, previously served as the Board’s vice-chair. Gov. Haley Barbour appointed Kelly to the Board of Education in 2011.

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi’s youngest school children are starting a new academic year with classes that provide a greater emphasis on literacy.
The focus on literacy is part of the Mississippi Literacy-Based Promotion Act, which will help ensure that every student completing 3rd grade reads at or above grade level.
