PARCC Sample Test Items Now Available for Computer Practice

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi teachers, along with teachers in 18 states and the District of Columbia, have new resources to help them prepare their students for upcoming field tests. The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) has posted sample test items for every grade on the testing platform students will use when taking the field test later this spring.

WHAT: At its regularly scheduled meeting, the Commission will determine if an extreme emergency situation exists that jeopardizes the safety, security and educational interests of the children enrolled in the Scott County School District.

State Board of Education Asks Governor to Declare State of Emergency

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education (MBE) determined that an extreme emergency situation exists in the Scott County School District. Acting on a recommendation from the Mississippi Commission on School Accreditation, the MBE voted unanimously to ask Gov. Phil Bryant to declare a state of emergency for the school district.

JACKSON, Miss. – Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education, issued the following statement today:

“We have been in conversations with the governor’s office regarding Scott County School District. It is an unusual situation because the district has a ‘B’ performance classification. I have directed staff to craft language that would allow the State Board of Education to have greater flexibility when similar situations occur in the future.

State Board of Education Adopts Temporary Rule to Allow Flexibility in School District Accreditation Withdrawal

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education approved a temporary rule today  that will allow the Commission on School Accreditation and the Board greater flexibility regarding the withdrawal of accreditation in a district that is placed under conservatorship.

State Board of Education Member Announces Resignation

JACKSON, Miss. – Howell “Hal” N. Gage, a member of the Mississippi Board of Education, announced his resignation today from the Board.

Gage, who currently serves as vice chairman of the Board, decided to step down to spend more time with his family. He was appointed to the Board in 2004 by former Gov. Haley Barbour to fill an unexpired term. He was reappointed in 2007 and his term was set to expire July 2016.

Students, Communities Provided Access to School Facilities for Recreation

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) in collaboration with the Safe Routes to School National Partnership in Mississippi will offer expanded resources for implementing shared use agreements. The National Partnership will provide extensive content expertise and resources to further support Mississippi’s efforts to provide opportunities for children to be active before and after school hours.
