SECC: MDE’s Focus on Literacy Training and Promotion Act Yields Strong Results

JACKSON, Miss. – A review of the Mississippi Department of Education’s implementation of the Literacy-Based Promotion Act showcased “many accomplishments” and “noticeable improvements in supporting teaching and learning around literacy,” according to a report from the Southeast Comprehensive Center (SECC), an affiliate of the American Institutes for Research (AIR).

State Superintendent Joins CCSSO Board of Directors

JACKSON, Miss. – The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today announced Dr. Carey M. Wright, state superintendent of education, will join its 2015-2016 Board of Directors.

CCSSO's Board of Directors manages the overall business affairs of the Council and is the governing body of the organization. The board is composed of the president, the president-elect, the past president, and six directors elected by CCSSO members.

Mississippi Awarded Grant to Improve Career Preparation Systems for Students

CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi is one of 24 states that have been awarded a grant to develop detailed career readiness action plans to expand economic opportunity for young people. In a sweeping commitment to ensure more young people graduate from high school prepared for college and well-paying careers, nearly half of the nation’s states will receive a total of $2.5 million through JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s New Skills for Youth initiative.

Wright: Mississippi Students Set to Begin New Statewide Testing Program

CLINTON, Miss. – Beginning April 25, the majority of Mississippi students will take new assessments aligned to the state’s learning goals. The Mississippi Assessment Program (MAP) will ask students in grades 3-8 and in high school Algebra I and English II to demonstrate and apply their knowledge and skills learned in the classroom in areas such as critical thinking, analytical writing, and problem solving.

Parent Resources for Mississippi Assessment Program (MAP) Now Available

CLINTON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) has developed resources for parents and families to help them become familiar with the expectations of the Mississippi Assessment Program (MAP).

MAP is the new statewide assessment for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics for grades 3-8 and Algebra I and English II. Students statewide will take MAP assessments during the testing window of April 25 through May 17. 

Licensure Hearing for Clarksdale Principal to be Held May 23

CLINTON, Miss. – Heidelberg Elementary School Principal Lowanda Tyler-Jones’ hearing before the Commission on Teacher and Administrator Education, Certification and Licensure and Development has been continued to 9 a.m. May 23.

The hearing will be held in the Old Supreme Court Chambers at the Mississippi State Capitol Building, 400 High St. in Jackson

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is seeking to revoke the license of Tyler-Jones. The MDE issued an administrative complaint against Tyler-Jones on Dec. 16, 2015.

Mississippi Teacher, Administrator of the Year Will Be Announced Thursday

WHO: The Mississippi Department of Education and the Mississippi Teacher Center will announce the 2016 Mississippi Teacher of the Year (MTOY) and the Mississippi Administrator of the Year (MAOY) at an annual luncheon. Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education, is scheduled to speak, as well as the 2015 National Teacher of the Year, Shanna Peeples.

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) and the Mississippi Teacher Center today announced that Corlis Curry, principal of Lawhon Elementary School in the Tupelo Public School District, has been selected as the 2016 Mississippi Administrator of the Year (MAOY), and Jodi McKenzie, 10th grade English teacher at Gautier High School (GHS) in the Pascagoula-Gautier School District, has been selected as the 2016 Mississippi Teacher of the Year (MTOY).
