Petal teacher receives $25,000 Milken Educator Award for building legacy of education in his hometown

JACKSON, Miss. – Petal Upper Elementary School fifth-grade math teacher Tyler Shows was surprised today with a $25,000 Milken Educator Award presented by the Milken Family Foundation at a 9:30 a.m. schoolwide assembly of cheering students, appreciative colleagues, local dignitaries and media.

MDE announces new members of State Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council for 2022-23

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) announced today the new members of the State Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SAC) for 2022-23. The council includes students in grades 11-12 or first year of college to serve as members for a term of two school years.

The council includes 63 new members. They will join 52 students returning to the council from the previous school year.

State Board of Education votes to begin APA process on proposed 2022 Social Studies Standards

JACKSON, Miss. – Today, the State Board of Education (SBE) voted to begin the Administrative Procedures Act process on proposed 2022 Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards (MCCRS) for Social Studies, which outline the skills and knowledge expected of students in each grade and subject.

Advanced Placement (AP) Participation and Achievement Among Mississippi Students Reaches a Record High in 2021-22

JACKSON, Miss. – During the 2021-22 school year, the number of Mississippi students taking and passing Advanced Placement (AP) exams reached a record high, with 10,534 public school students taking 14,788 AP exams, and 5,573 exams earning a qualifying score. The exam pass rate reached an all-time high of 37.7%.

In 2020-21, 8,775 students took 12,515 AP exams. The pass rate was 37.4%, with 4,678 exams earning a qualifying score.

MDE releases pandemic-era school and district grades for 2021-22

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi schools and districts will earn new grades for the first time since 2019 when the Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) approves accountability grades Thursday, Sept. 29, for the 2021-22 school year. The grades reflect how student achievement has improved after declining during the early part of the pandemic.
