Licensure Commission Determines Former Clarksdale Principal Directed Cheating, Bans Licensure Application for 20 Years

JACKSON, Miss. – The Commission on Teacher and Administrator Education, Certification and Licensure and Development determined today that Lowanda Tyler-Jones, former principal of Heidelberg Elementary School, violated state law by directing her staff to cheat on state assessments. As a result, the Commission made the unanimous decision to deny Tyler-Jones’ application to renew her administrator license and prohibit her from applying for any educator license for 20 years.
MDE Schedules Regional Literacy Meetings for Parents of K-3 Students

JACKSON, Miss – In an effort to assist school districts with the implementation of the Literacy-Based Promotion Act, the Mississippi Department of Education is conducting regional meetings for parents of Kindergarten through 3rd grade students. Parents will receive an overview of the legislation and assessment, as well as strategies that can be used at home to help improve reading outcomes for children.
MDE Announces 2nd Lottery for Special Needs Scholarship Program Applications

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education announced plans today for a lottery on January 31 to award 134 Education Scholarship Accounts (ESA) for the 2016-17 school year that were forfeited by families who opted not to participate in the program.
Established by the Equal Opportunity for Students with Special Needs Act of 2015, the ESA program provides scholarships to parents of students with disabilities who want to remove their child from a public school to seek educational services elsewhere.

State Board Approves Plans for Two New Districts of Innovation

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) today approved plans for the Grenada School District and a collaboration between Baldwyn and Booneville school districts to become Mississippi’s two newest Districts of Innovation.
