ACT Scores for Mississippi Juniors Increase

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education released today the results from the statewide administration of the ACT to all high school juniors in the 2015-16 school year, revealing the percentage of students meeting the benchmark scores in all four tested subjects increased from 9 percent in 2014-15 to 11 percent in 2015-16.

School Focus recently was created to highlight accomplishments of teachers and students and will be published each fall and spring for educators, government officials and others working to advance K-12 education.
MDE Announces Meeting Dates to Gather Public Input for State Education Plan

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education announced Tuesday a schedule of public meeting dates for the Mississippi Succeeds Listening Tour designed to gather public feedback for Mississippi’s plan to comply with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the federal law that replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB).
MDE to Seek Proposals for Additional Early Learning Collaboratives

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) today for additional Early Learning Collaboratives (ELCs), which will expand the number of publicly funded pre-K classrooms throughout the state.
The Early Learning Collaborative Act of 2013 established the ELC program, which provides funding to local communities to establish, expand, support and facilitate the successful implementation of quality early childhood education and development services.

Two Mississippi Teachers Earn Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (MSMS) teacher Lauren Zarandona and Brandon Middle School teacher Karin Bowen are among 213 teachers nationwide who will receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) at a recognition ceremony Sept. 8 in Washington, D.C. The ceremony will recognize PAEMST recipients for both the 2014 and 2015 school year.
