JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education voted Friday to begin the public comment period on a policy for the use of seclusion and restraint in schools. The public comment period will last 30 days.
State Board of Education Moves to One-Day Monthly Meetings

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education has voted to change its monthly meetings from two days to one day, effective July 16. Previously, the Board’s work sessions were on the third Thursdays of each month at 10 a.m. and the meetings were on Fridays at 8:30 a.m.
The work session and the monthly meeting will be on the same day, the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m., unless prior notice is given for a change in dates. The meetings, on the 4th floor of the Central High School Building, are open to the public.

Mississippi Board of Education Asks Governor to Declare State of Emergency

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education (MBE) determined that an extreme emergency situation exists in the Tunica County School District. Acting on a recommendation from the Mississippi Commission on School Accreditation, the MBE voted unanimously to ask Gov. Phil Bryant to declare a state of emergency for the school district.

MDE Encourages Parents to Apply for Special Needs Scholarships

Ocean Springs High School Recognized as Top in the Nation for Advanced Placement Growth

BILOXI, Miss. – The Mississippi Board of Education honored Ocean Springs High School during its July meeting for achieving the top growth in the nation on Advanced Placement (AP) exams.
Ocean Springs High School expanded student access to AP courses through its partnership with the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI). In one year, the number of qualifying AP scores students achieved skyrocketed from 18 to 195.
Central High School Building Damage More Extensive Than Earlier Estimates

JACKSON, Miss. – The Central High School Building, which houses several offices of the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), will be closed for the next five to seven days for safety reasons. The Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration is in the process of surveying the building and the smoke and water damage is more extensive than initially estimated.
