JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) announced today the members of the inaugural State Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council. The council includes students in grades 11-12 or first year of college to serve as members for a term of two school years.

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) announced a schedule of visits to recognize all A districts. District leaders, school board members, teachers, students and community members will join Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education, at each location.
Statewide, the number of schools and districts earning an A has more than doubled, with A-rated schools jumping from 88 to 196, and A-rated districts increasing from 14 to 31.
Mississippi’s Chronic Absenteeism Rate Declines

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) has released the most recent school- and district-level chronic absence data, which shows that 13.05% of Mississippi students were absent 10% or more of the 2018-19 school year. This is the lowest rate since the MDE has been calculating and reporting chronic absenteeism rates.

Mississippi Allocates $1 Million to Help High School Students Earn Career Certification, College Credits

JACKSON, Miss – School districts will receive state funds, on a reimbursement basis, this school year to help pay for a national career readiness certification exam and advanced courses that lead to college credits. The Mississippi Legislature appropriated $1 million for the program, which will allocate funds to districts based on last year’s enrollment for grades 9-12.
SBE Votes to Begin Public Comment Period on U.S. History End-of-Course Exam

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) voted today to begin the public comment process on whether the state should eliminate the U.S. History end-of-course exam.
The SBE’s final decision on the end-of-course exam will occur at the conclusion of the public comment period and after comments have been reviewed. Any decision to remove the U.S. History end-of-course exam would not be effective until the 2020-21 school year.
Three Out of Four Schools, 70% of Districts Rated C or Higher

JACKSON, Miss. – Nearly three quarters of schools and 70% of districts will be rated C or higher when the Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) approves accountability grades Thursday for the 2018-19 school year. The grades show a three-year trend of continuous school and district improvement.
