Dropout/Graduation Rate Information

CALCULATIONS
Document describing the approved procedures for calculating graduation, completion, and dropout counts and rates by tracking cohorts of students in MSIS. The final procedures went through the state’s Administrative Procedures Act (public comment) process and were approved by the Mississippi State Board of Education in April 2007.

COHORT SY0809G09 (Begins with First-time 9th graders in 2008/2009)
Graduation, completion, and dropout rate estimates for the full cohort of students beginning with ninth graders in school year 2008/2009 (SY0809G09). Basically, that was the “2012 graduating class.” The shorthand nomenclature used for referencing the four year statistics (counts, rates, etc.) for this cohort is “SY0809G09_4YR.”

Note: This cohort was calculated using only students who were in the ninth grade for the FIRST time during school year 2008/2009 (without repeaters). The results of this cohort can only be compared to other cohorts containing only first-time ninth graders.

COHORT SY0708G09 (Begins with First-time 9th graders in 2007/2008)
Graduation, completion, and dropout rate estimates for the full cohort of students beginning with ninth graders in school year 2007/2008 (SY0708G09). Basically, that was the “2011 graduating class.” The shorthand nomenclature used for referencing the four year statistics (counts, rates, etc.) for this cohort is “SY0708G09_4YR.”

Note: This cohort was calculated using only students who were in the ninth grade for the FIRST time during school year 2007/2008 (without repeaters). The results of this cohort can only be compared to other cohorts containing only first-time ninth graders.

COHORT SY0607G09 (Begins with First-time 9th graders in 2006/2007)
Graduation, completion, and dropout rate estimates for the full cohort of students beginning with ninth graders in school year 2006/2007 (SY0607G09). Basically, that was the “2010 graduating class.” The shorthand nomenclature used for referencing the four year statistics (counts, rates, etc.) for this cohort is “SY0607G09_4YR.”

Note: This cohort was calculated using only students who were in the ninth grade for the FIRST time during school year 2006/2007 (without repeaters). The results of this cohort can only be compared to other cohorts containing only first-time ninth graders.

COHORT SY0506G09 (Begins with First-time 9th graders in 2005/2006)
Graduation, completion, and dropout rate estimates for the full cohort of students beginning with ninth graders in school year 2005/2006 (SY0506G09). Basically, that was the “2009 graduating class.” The shorthand nomenclature used for referencing the four year statistics (counts, rates, etc.) for this cohort is “SY0506G09_4YR.”

Note: This cohort was calculated using only students who were in the ninth grade for the FIRST time during school year 2005/2006 (without repeaters). The results of this cohort can only be compared to other cohorts containing only first-time ninth graders.  Additionally, the SY0506G09 cohort was the first cohort for which school-level rates were calculated.

COHORT SY0405G09 (Begins with First-time 9th graders in 2004/2005)
Graduation, completion, and dropout rate estimates for the full cohort of students beginning with ninth graders in school year 2004/2005 (SY0405G09). Basically, that was the “2008 graduating class.” The shorthand nomenclature used for referencing the four year statistics (counts, rates, etc.) for this cohort is “SY0405G09_4YR.”

Note: This cohort was calculated using only students who were in the ninth grade for the FIRST time during school year 2004/2005 (without repeaters). The results of this cohort can only be compared to other cohort containing only first-time ninth graders.

COHORT SY0304G09 (Begins with First-time 9th graders in 2003/2004)
Graduation, completion, and dropout rate estimates for the full cohort of students beginning with ninth graders in school year 2003/2004 (SY0304G09). Basically, that was the “2007 graduating class.” The shorthand nomenclature used for referencing the four year statistics (counts, rates, etc.) for this cohort is “SY0304G09_4YR.”

Note: This cohort was calculated using only students who who were in the ninth grade for the FIRST time during school year 2003/2004 (without repeaters). The results of this cohort can only be compared to other cohort results ABOVE the red line.

COHORT SY0203G09 (Begins with First-time 9th graders in 2002/2003) (SY0203G09 statistics computed without repeaters to provide comparability with SY0304G09 and beyond statistics)
Graduation, completion, and dropout rate estimates for the full cohort of students beginning with ninth graders in school year 2002/2003 (SY0203G09). Basically, that was the “2006 graduating class.” The shorthand nomenclature used for referencing the four year statistics (counts, rates, etc.) for this cohort is “SY0203G09_4YR.”

Note: This cohort was calculated including students who may not have been in the ninth grade for the FIRST time during school year 2002/2003 (without repeaters) AND again not including students who may not have been in the ninth grade for the FIRST time during school year 2002/2003 (with repeaters). The statistics for calculations without repeaters are reported above the red line and the statistics for calculations with repeaters are reported below the red line. These dual statistics for the 2002/2003 cohort were calculated to provide comparability since statistics can not be compared across the red line.

NOTECohort statistics above CAN NOT be compared to cohort statistics below!!

COHORT SY0203G09 (Begins with 9th graders in 2002/2003 – includes repeaters) (SY0203G09 statistics computed including repeaters to provide comparability with SY0102G09 statistics)

Note: This cohort included students who may not have been in the ninth grade for the FIRST time during school year 2002/2003. In other words, the cohort includes some “repeaters.” The results reported for this cohort can be compared to the results reported for the earlier cohort (SY0102G09) because the calculations are based on the same data assumptions and formulas and both cohorts included repeaters.

COHORT SY0102G09 (Begins with 9th graders in 2001/2002 – includes repeaters)
Initial work developing a procedure for tracking students in MSIS and calculating estimated graduation, completion, and dropout rates. This work was conducted using the first student cohort in MSIS that could be tracked over a four year period. It began with ninth graders in school year 2001/2002. The first estimated rates reflected the status of that first “full cohort” of students through the end of the 2004/2005 school year. Basically, that was the “2005 graduating class.” Additional statistics were calculated for that same cohort of students over five years (through the end of the 2005/2006 school year). The shorthand nomenclature used for referencing that cohort is “SY0102G09.” The four year statistics (counts, rates, etc.) are referenced as “SY0102G09_4YR” and the five year statistics for that cohort are referenced as “SY0102G09_5YR.”

Note: This cohort included students who may not have been in the ninth grade for the FIRST time during school year 2001/2002. In other words, the cohort includes some “repeaters.”
