How Chronic Absenteeism is Calculated 

  • Student Enrollment is based on the district’s cumulative enrollment number.
  • Students enrolled in more than one school and misses 10% of the time there will be included in the report.
  • Any student enrolled in a school for at least 10 days and misses 10% of the school days must be included in the calculation.
  • Any student absent 10% or more of the time that he/she was enrolled in any school will be included in the report.
  • Any student who misses 50% or more of a school day will be counted as absent starting with the 2018-2019 school year.

Differences Between Average Daily Attendance (ADA) and Chronic Absenteeism

Average Daily Attendance (ADA) is a “snapshot” for a specified period in the academic school year which is usually an average of months 2 (October) and 3 (November).  An average of month 1 (August/September) and month 9 (May) of the previous school year may be utilized if higher daily attendance is attained. However, chronic absenteeism spans throughout the current academic school year and is utilized to give a clear correlation between student absences and academic impact.

The percent of enrolled students who attend school each day. While the average daily attendance rate has been used for reporting purposes for many years, the use of a single average measure tends to mask significant attendance problems.
