The PAEMST Program is the nation\u2019s highest honor for teachers of mathematics and science (including computer science).<\/p>\n<p>Mississippi\u2019s 2021 PAEMST state-level finalists:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"146\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/News\/dr._trisha_gilbreath.jpg\" width=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Trisha Gilbreath<\/strong>&nbsp;<br \/>\nGrade 10-12 Mathematics teacher&nbsp;<br \/>\nNorthwest Rankin High School, Rankin County School District<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"158\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/News\/jaqueline_lewis.jpg\" width=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jaqueline Lewis<\/strong><br \/>\nGrade 9 Mathematics teacher; Grade 11-12 Computer Science teacher<br \/>\nEnterprise High School, Enterprise School District<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"156\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/News\/treasure_lynch.jpg\" width=\"115\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Treasure Lynch<\/strong><br \/>\nGrade 10 Mathematics teacher<br \/>\nGulfport High School, Gulfport School District<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kenneth Peagler\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"4615157f-e3cf-48a5-b449-7ce53cf98c40\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/kenneth_peagler.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kenneth Peagler<\/strong><br \/>\nHigh School Science teacher<br \/>\nBrandon High School, Rankin County School District<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Christina (Tina) Walters\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"d513d2f9-38b7-4265-a12b-3a372001d6dd\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/christina_tina_walters.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Christina (Tina) Walters<\/strong><br \/>\nGrade 10-12 Science teacher<br \/>\nSouth Jones High School, Jones County School District<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ashley Elizabeth Webb\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"4b306579-da3e-4597-a5bb-d36f5691fe3d\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/ashley_elizabeth_webb2.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashley Elizabeth Webb<\/strong><br \/>\nGrade 10-12 Science teacher<br \/>\nDeSoto Central High School, DeSoto County Schools<\/p>\n<p>Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMississippi\u2019s PAEMST state-level finalists are committed to excellence and are leaders among their colleagues,\u201d said Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education. \u201cI congratulate them as they vie for the highest honor in their profession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Trisha Gilbreath,<\/strong> who teaches AP Calculus, Digital Electronics and Principles of Engineering, said, \u201cI want my students to leave my classroom with three important lessons \u2013 they are loved, their ideas are valuable, and they can achieve far more than they ever expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Jaqueline Lewis,<\/strong> who has 17 years of experience as a computer software design engineer and teaches Algebra 1, AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles, said, \u201cWhile varying and evolving instructional strategies are important, they are all secondary to the need to motivate, inspire, and build a desire in students to want to learn and to excel in the implementation of what they have learned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1px;margin-bottom: 13px\"><strong>Treasure Lynch,<\/strong> who teaches Honors Geometry\/Algebra II, said, \u201cTrue learning is determined by comprehension and application rather than memorization and demonstration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kenneth Peagler,<\/strong> who teaches Physics, Physical Science, AP Physics and AP Computer Science, said, \u201cTeaching is not about finding or creating the most rigorous and\/or entertaining tasks; instead, it\u2019s about using your content to build engaged students, that love to learn, that can take any task and will think, persevere, and exceed any goals set for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 13px\"><strong>Christina (Tina) Walters,<\/strong> who teaches Chemistry and AP Chemistry, said, \u201cMy goal is to create a safe learning environment where risk-taking is commonplace and problem-solving is encouraged in an effort to foster love of learning independent of ability level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1px;margin-bottom: 13px\"><strong>Ashley Elizabeth Webb,<\/strong> who teaches Physics, AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2 and PSAT, said, \u201cAll students deserve a welcoming, engaging, and challenging classroom culture that fits both their emotional and academic needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PAEMST program, established in 1983 by the White House, allows each state to select up to three state finalists in mathematics and up to three state finalists in science. One of the state finalists in each content area may be selected as the Presidential Awardee for the state, which is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The Mississippi State Board of Education will recognize Mississippi\u2019s 2021 PAEMST finalists later this year.
