{"id":666,"date":"2020-03-16T23:22:10","date_gmt":"2020-03-16T23:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wptest.mdek12.org\/testsite2\/2020\/03\/16\/state-superintendent-of-education-provides-recommendation-regarding-statewide-assessments-and-accountability_20200316\/"},"modified":"2025-02-11T15:54:50","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T21:54:50","slug":"state-superintendent-of-education-provides-recommendation-regarding-statewide-assessments-and-accountability_20200316","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdek12.org\/communications\/2020\/03\/16\/state-superintendent-of-education-provides-recommendation-regarding-statewide-assessments-and-accountability_20200316\/","title":{"rendered":"State Superintendent of Education Provides Recommendation Regarding Statewide Assessments and Accountability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEWS RELEASE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For Immediate Release:\u00a0 March 16, 2020<\/p>\n<p>(JACKSON, MS) \u2013 The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is providing this update on the impact of school closures due to the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an unprecedented time in our state and country, and the safety,\u00a0health\u00a0and well-being\u00a0of students, school staff and communities\u00a0are\u00a0the MDE\u2019s\u00a0and the Mississippi State Board of Education\u2019s\u00a0(SBE)\u00a0top priorities,\u201d said Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education.<\/p>\n<p>Dr.\u00a0Wright\u00a0has\u00a0made a\u00a0recommendation\u00a0to the SBE that\u00a0state and federal\u00a0assessment\u00a0and accountability\u00a0requirements\u00a0be suspended for the 2019-20 school year. The MDE will seek the maximum authority and waivers afforded by the U.S. Department of Education (ED)\u00a0and\u00a0other federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally,\u00a0Dr. Wright\u00a0will continue to work collaboratively with Gov. Tate Reeves and\u00a0Dr. Thomas Dobbs, State Health Officer\u00a0with the\u00a0Mississippi Department of Health, as the\u00a0pandemic\u00a0evolves. Should\u00a0schools statewide\u00a0need\u00a0to\u00a0close for an extended\u00a0period of time, Dr. Wright will recommend that the SBE waive applicable policies regarding attendance, promotion and graduation.<\/p>\n<p>The SBE is scheduled to meet\u00a0virtually\u00a0at 10 a.m. March 19.
