{"id":3564,"date":"2025-06-19T09:40:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T15:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdek12.org\/communications\/?p=3564"},"modified":"2025-08-04T09:44:54","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T15:44:54","slug":"oak-grove-high-schools-michelle-xie-selected-as-2025-26-state-board-of-education-junior-student-representative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdek12.org\/communications\/2025\/06\/19\/oak-grove-high-schools-michelle-xie-selected-as-2025-26-state-board-of-education-junior-student-representative\/","title":{"rendered":"Oak Grove High School\u2019s Michelle Xie selected as 2025-26 State Board of Education junior student representative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEWS RELEASE<br \/>\n<\/strong>For Immediate Release: \u00a0June 19, 2025<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oak Grove High School\u2019s Michelle Xie selected as 2025-26 State Board of Education junior student representative<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3499\" style=\"margin-left: 18px;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/06\/Michelle-Xie_2.png\" alt=\"Michelle Xie\" width=\"300\" height=\"345\" align=\"right\" \/>JACKSON, Miss. \u2013 The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) has selected Michelle Xie of Oak Grove High School in the Lamar County School District to serve as the high school SBE junior representative for the 2025-26 school year.<\/p>\n<p>Crosby Parker, the 2024-25 junior student representative of Gulfport High School in the Gulfport School District, is now serving as the 2025-26 SBE senior student representative.<\/p>\n<p>Student representatives are non-voting SBE members who serve two years and provide input on policy decisions that affect Mississippi public schools. Each year after the senior representative graduates, the junior representative is promoted to the senior representative position and a new junior representative is appointed.<\/p>\n<p>At Oak Grove High School, Michelle has served as the speech captain of the Speech and Debate Team, secretary on Student Council, and treasurer of the Beta Club. She is also a member of the school\u2019s French Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Club. Michelle advocates for gender equality in STEM and is co-founder of HerStemJourney, an initiative designed to empower girls to pursue STEM. She also created a YouTube Channel \u2013 Michelle\u2019s STEM Journey \u2013 to support the cause. Her additional community service and extracurricular activities include being Mississippi\u2019s sole delegate to the YMCA Youth Advocate Program, representative on the Hattiesburg Mayor\u2019s Youth Council, author of the novel titled <em>Skyborn, <\/em>violinist in the Hattiesburg Youth Orchestra and STEM tutorer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am interested in serving as a Student Representative of the Mississippi State Board of Education because I am passionate about creating equitable opportunities in education and advocating for programs that empower students to succeed,\u201d Michelle wrote in her student rep application. \u201cI hope to amplify the voices of students from different backgrounds and bring their thoughts to the table. It would be my honor to be a part of the process that works to create a more positive educational experience for students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3499\" style=\"margin-right: 18px;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/06\/Price-Denham.png\" alt=\"Price Denham\" width=\"296\" height=\"357\" align=\"left\" \/>The SBE chose Price Denham also of Oak Grove High School in the Lamar School District to be the alternate junior representative. An alternate is named to fulfill the term of the junior student representative should the representative be unable to complete the term for any reason.<\/p>\n<p>The eligible applicant pool for the 2025-26 junior representative included 30 students. The <a href=\"https:\/\/mdek12.org\/communications\/2025\/04\/21\/state-board-of-education-selects-semifinalists-for-2025-26-state-board-student-rep-program\/\"><u>10 semifinalists<\/u><\/a> will join the Mississippi Department of Education\u2019s Student Advisory Council, which will provide input about educational opportunities and policy with the state superintendent of education.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 15 state boards of education have successfully implemented student advisory programs.
