Most respondents identified themselves as teachers (35%), followed by district\/school administrators (17%), parents\/guardians (16%) and business\/community leaders (4%). The remaining respondents included postsecondary representatives, statewide leaders\/legislators, students, school\/district employees and other citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The survey asked respondents to rate the level of importance of a list of qualities and priorities they want from the next state superintendent of education and were provided the opportunity to add additional comments.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of respondents rated the following\u00a0<strong>qualities<\/strong>\u00a0as \u201cvery important\u201d or \u201cextremely important\u201d:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Inspires trust, has high levels of self-confidence and optimism, and models high standards of integrity and personal performance:\u00a0<strong>89%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Is strongly committed to a \u201cstudent first\u201d philosophy in all decisions:\u00a0<strong>85%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Develops and communicates a vision coupled with the ability to lead a large, complex organization dedicated to continuous improvement:\u00a0<strong>83%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Possesses the ability and passion needed to continuously improve student performance on a statewide basis, especially in identifying and closing student achievement gaps:\u00a0<strong>80%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Identifies and selects team members who can advance the State Board of Education Strategic Plan:\u00a0<strong>80%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Possesses the leadership skills required to meet the challenges of a racially, ethnically and culturally diverse state:\u00a0<strong>76%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Works with legislators on key issues and leads a complex organization throughout the legislative process:\u00a0<strong>75%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Provides leadership in the planning, implementation, and assessment of relevant professional development for all state educators:\u00a0<strong>71%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Is a resident of Mississippi or has some ties to Mississippi:\u00a0<strong>62%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The majority of respondents rated the following\u00a0<strong>areas of focus<\/strong>\u00a0as \u201cvery important\u201d or \u201cextremely important\u201d:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Develop and retain effective teachers:\u00a0<strong>95%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Increase access to high-quality Career and Technical Education programs and pathways that lead to national industry certifications:\u00a0<strong>83%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Improve academic outcomes in low-achieving schools and districts:\u00a0<strong>80%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Increase access to high-quality early childhood programs:\u00a0<strong>73%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Support students\u2019 social and emotional learning and mental health needs:\u00a0<strong>73%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Increase access to advanced coursework (AP, dual credit\/dual enrollment, IB):\u00a0<strong>65%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Decrease achievement gaps among student subgroups:\u00a0<strong>64%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sustain and\/or increase the rigor of academic standards:\u00a0<strong>63%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Help students accelerate learning and recover from the pandemic:\u00a0<strong>59%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Require programs implemented by the Mississippi Department of Education to collect data about how each program has improved student proficiency or performance to determine if a program is effective or should be continued or modified:\u00a0<strong>57%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Increase capacity of teachers and leaders to implement digital learning:\u00a0<strong>52%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The SBE will use the survey results to help evaluate candidates for the state superintendent of education position. The SBE is working with the firm\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/macnjake.com\/\"><u>McPherson &amp; Jacobson, LLC<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to lead the search process and expects to select a final candidate before the end of 2023.
