Mississippi Students Can Earn Recognition for Biliteracy

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: November 6, 2019

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi students can now earn recognition for achieving proficiency in one or more world languages and English. The Mississippi State Board of Education approved in October a Mississippi Seal of Biliteracy policy and guidelines for school districts on the process of awarding and recognizing students who achieve proficiency in two or more languages by the time they graduate high school.

The Seal of Biliteracy demonstrates attainment of biliteracy for students, employers, and postsecondary institutions, it also signals a student’s readiness for college and career and for engagement as a global citizen.

Each school district will determine participation in the Mississippi Department of Education’s Seal of Biliteracy program, which will begin this school year. Recognition for demonstrating a level of biliteracy will be indicated on the final high school transcript for students.

The purpose of the Mississippi Seal of Biliteracy policy is to provide school districts with minimum standards for student participation and completion. The guidelines provide assistance, examples, and resources to school districts on the process of awarding and recognizing students who are eligible to receive a Seal of Biliteracy.
