JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) will host a two-day literacy summit Sept. 13-14 for parents, guardians, educators, community partners, and policy makers to support efforts to improve student achievement.
The theme for the summit is “A Shared Commitment to Literacy: Improving Literacy Outcomes for ALL from Birth to the Workforce.”
Local and national experts will present on ways educators, parents, communities and policymakers can enhance opportunities for children, from birth to high school, to become better, more proficient readers. Improved educational outcomes for children will enhance Mississippi’s job-ready workforce.
Summit attendees will engage in relevant sessions to support literacy success. Session strands and outcomes include:
- Parents/Guardians – Explore practical strategies, supports, and resources that will assist children in meeting grade-level expectations and being ready for college and career.
- Educators – Identify, employ, and evaluate high-quality resources and best practices to ensure the success of all students.
- Policy Makers – Understand how policy and legislation promote statewide literacy efforts and impact employment and economic development.
- Community Partners – Understand how community partner and stakeholder collaboration can impact child/student outcomes to increase economic and workforce development.
