Mississippi English Language Arts in Action: Higher Expectations, Higher Achievement

JACKSON, Miss. – South Jones High School in the Jones County School District has fully embraced the Mississippi College and Career Ready Standards. Teachers, administrators and students are achieving more because they have raised expectations for what is possible.

This “Mississippi School Spotlight” video takes viewers inside the classroom of 7th grade English language arts teacher Jennifer Valentine, NBCT, where great teaching and learning take place every day.

South Jones High School English language arts teacher Jennifer Valentine, NBCT, leads her 7th grade class in a narrative writing lesson.

Valentine was one of the 60 Mississippi educators who served on the Mississippi College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS) Review Committee.  The committee evaluated more than 8,500 items of feedback about the MCCRS that were submitted by close to 1,400 contributors. Committee members examined whether the suggested changes aligned to critical content that students should know and be able to do, whether the current standard needed clarity or rewording to promote understanding and whether it was developmentally appropriate for students.

The Mississippi State Board of Education voted to open the MCCRS committee’s proposed changes for public comment through Jan. 12, 2016. Any changes to the standards would be implemented in the 2016-17 school year.
