Franklin County School District Chess Program to Be Featured on CBS’ 60 Minutes

JACKSON, Miss – The Franklin County School District has teamed up with the Southwest Mississippi Chess Foundation to promote the teaching and learning of chess for its social, intellectual and academic benefits.

The program develops strong chess players who can compete at the highest levels and uses chess as a model for other academic learning. 

 

District Consolidation Meetings Set for March 21 and March 24

March 20, 2017

JACKSON, Miss – Local officials will meet on March 21 to discuss details related to the consolidation of the Montgomery County and Winona school districts (as ordered by SB 2495) and on March 24 to discuss details for the consolidation of the Lumberton, Lamar County and Poplarville school districts (as ordered by SB 2500).

MDE Announces 2017 Mississippi Administrator, Teacher of the Year

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) and the Mississippi Teacher Center today announced that Dr. Jessica Broome, principal of Pearl Junior High School in the Pearl Public School District, has been selected as the 2017 Mississippi Administrator of the Year (MAOY), and Luke Daniels, a 6th grade mathematics teacher at Petal Upper Elementary School in the Petal School District, has been selected as the 2017 Mississippi Teacher of the Year (MTOY).

MDE Releases Findings of Financial and Federal Programs Compliance Audits

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) released today the results of a fund-level financial audit and a compliance audit of selected federal programs for FY 2015-16. The audits found significant deficiencies and material weaknesses in the MDE’s program administration and accounting practices during 2015-16.
