Mississippi Receives $189,781 Grant to Help Students Take Advanced Placement Tests

JACKSON, Miss. – The U.S. Department of Education (ED) has awarded the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) $189,781 in Advanced Placement (AP) grants as part of its efforts to boost college- and career-readiness for historically underserved students. Mississippi is one of 41 states and Washington, D.C., that received a total of $28.4 million to help defray the costs of taking advanced placement tests for students from low-income families.
MDE Releases Family Guides for Student Success to Support Parents

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) developed family guides to assist with grade-level at home strategies and activities that support both student and parent understanding of the English language arts and mathematics standards. Parents can use the activity booklets at home to support what their children are learning in the classroom.
Mississippi Students Increase Advanced Placement Participation, Achievemen

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi saw growth in all three major categories of Advanced Placement (AP) participation and performance, with 8,207 students taking AP exams in the 2015-16 school year. The number is a 23.1 percent increase over the previous school year.
Students took 12,455 AP exams in 2015-16, which is an increase of 22.8 percent over the previous year. The number of students achieving an AP score of 3 or higher increased 11.1 percent to 3,707.
MDE Releases School, District Performance Labels for 2015-16 School Year

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) today released letter grades for schools and districts based on Mississippi’s A-F accountability system that evaluates how schools and districts performed in the 2015-16 school year.
District grades for 2015-16 include 14 “A” districts, 39 “B” districts, 36 “C” districts, 35 “D” districts and 19 “F” districts.
The Mississippi State Board of Education approved the 2015-16 accountability results during its Oct. 20 Board meeting.

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi showed significant increases in 4th and 8th grade science on the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), which ranks the state No. 4 in the nation for growth in both grades since 2009.
Mississippi is one of 18 states that showed significant score gain in 4th grade science from 2009 to 2015. For 8th grade science, Mississippi is one of 24 states that showed significant score gain from 2009 to 2015.

JACKSON, Miss. — The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) elected Dr. John Kelly, member and former chairman of the Mississippi State Board of Education, to serve as chair-elect of the organization in 2017 and chair in 2018. Kelly will begin his term as chair-elect in January 2017 and then serve as chair of the association’s board in 2018.

MDE Releases District-level Achievement Gap Data

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) released today district-level student achievement gap databy student subgroups, which shows how proficiency levels among different racial and socio-economic groups vary within districts.
The achievement gap report is based on the results of the Mississippi Assessment Program (MAP) English language arts and mathematics tests that were administered in the 2015-16 school year.
