MDE Set to Release Algebra I, English II Test Scores

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) will release and discuss the 2014-15 statewide and district test scores in English II and Algebra I during a special-called meeting of the Mississippi Board of Education.

The Board is scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov.5. The meeting will be in the South Pointe Business Park (former WorldCom building) in the 4th floor multipurpose room.

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) released today high school results from the first assessments that measured Mississippi’s students’ progress toward the academic goals laid out in the Mississippi College and Career Ready Standards, which were designed to ensure students have the skills and knowledge they need in jobs and college. 

Licensure Commission Suspends License of Clarksdale Municipal School District Teacher Due to Cheating

JACKSON, Miss. – The Commission on Teacher and Administrator Education, Certification and Licensure and Development decided today to suspend the license of Clarksdale Municipal School District teacher Tetra Winters after determining she violated state law by knowingly and willfully cheating on state assessments during the 2012-13 school year at Heidelberg Elementary School. Winters’ license will be suspended for five years.

MDE Responds to PEER Report on Early Learning Collaboratives

JACKSON, Miss. – For the second time in 2015, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) has received a PEER Committee report that neglected to adhere to national standards for evaluating educational programs and criticized the MDE for its implementation of a program that fully adhered to the law.

The most recent report, “The Early Learning Collaborative Act of 2013: Evaluation of the Operations and Effectiveness of the Program,” reviewed the first year of the implementation of the state’s Early Learning Collaboratives (ELCs).

MDE Charges Clarksdale Principal Lowanda Tyler-Jones with Cheating on State Tests

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) issued an administrative complaint on Dec. 16 against Lowanda Tyler-Jones, principal of Heidelberg Elementary School in the Clarksdale Municipal School District, for violating state law by knowingly and willfully cheating on state assessments.

This is the third complaint filed as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of testing irregularities at Heidelberg Elementary School. MDE is seeking to revoke the license of Tyler-Jones.

District- and School-Level Results for ACT for all Juniors and Kindergarten Readiness Assessment Available for Public Viewing

JACKSON, Miss. – School- and district-level passing rates for the spring 2015 ACT for juniors and the fall 2015 Kindergarten Readiness Assessment are now available to the public. ACT results can be found here. Kindergarten Readiness Assessment Results can be found here. Results by school and district are presented as percentages in order to protect student privacy.

MDE Awards 286 Scholarships to Parents of Children with Special Needs

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education has awarded 286 scholarships to parents of students with special needs, totaling $198,139.41. The Education Scholarship Accounts (ESA), created through the 2015 Equal Opportunity for Students with Special Needs Act, provides an opportunity for parents who wish to withdraw their child with special needs from the public school system to use scholarship money to help defray the cost of private school tuition or other specific allowable activities to educate their child.
