Mississippi Students Impacted if Sequestration Occurs

JACKSON, Miss. – Dr. Lynn House, interim state superintendent of education, said sequestration would impact every school district in Mississippi.

“A drastic cut such as this would be devastating to an already underfunded education budget in Mississippi. Public schools in Mississippi rely on more than $795 million to fund various programs, from school lunches to special education. It is our hope that an agreement can be reached before Friday to avoid any loss of desperately needed funds for our students.”

MDE Sets Annual Measurable Objectives to Close Achievement Gaps, Raise Proficiency

JACKSON, Miss. – The goal of the Mississippi Department of Education is for every child to be proficient in academic performance, regardless of race, gender or geographic location. The annual measurable objectives (AMO) are a commitment by the department to increase student growth and to target resources to help students reach their full potential.

Go HARD Dropout Prevention Pilot Program Sets Dates for Spring Break Tour

WHO: The Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Dropout Prevention and Compulsory School Attendance Enforcement will be hosting the Go HARD Spring Break Tour March 8-16. The public is invited to attend and support this initiative to increase the graduation rate and decrease the dropout rate in Mississippi.  The event will include information about the importance of staying in school, activities, music, speakers, food and prizes.

MDE Announces New Planning Tool to Help Districts Prepare for Rigorous 21st Century Assessments

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education today announced a new planning tool and guidance from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) for schools and districts that will help them get ready for new, 21st century assessments in the 2014-2015 school year.

Hundreds of Students to Attend Go HARD Dropout Prevention Summit in Jackson

WHO: The Go HARD Dropout Prevention campaign, sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Education, Office of Dropout Prevention and Compulsory School Attendance Enforcement and the Office of Special Education, will hold an end-of-year statewide summit. Hundreds of students from around Mississippi will attend.

WHAT: The summit will feature Mississippi and national speakers, who will share personal stories that will encourage students to realize their potential and help them overcome obstacles.
