MDE Announces Schools Affected by Questar Assessment Breach

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: January 22, 2018

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi Education Department’s (MDE) assessment vendor, Questar Assessment, Inc., reported today that 663 students in the Tupelo and Jefferson County school districts were affected by the data breach the company discovered last week. This represents a fraction (0.26%) of the to 258,501 computer-based test takers in spring and fall 2017. Questar had originally reported the breach related to tests administered in 2016.

MDE Announces Regional Literacy Meetings for Parents of K-3 Students

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education announced today a series of regional meetings across the state for parents of students in Kindergarten through grade 3. At the meetings, parents will receive an overview of the state law concerning literacy and assessment, as well as strategies that can be used at home to help improve reading outcomes for children.

Mississippi, New York Included in Questar Data Breach Incident

JACKSON, Miss. – Questar Assessment Inc., the Mississippi statewide assessment vendor, confirmed late Thursday that the company experienced a data breach affecting Mississippi and New York. Questar administers Mississippi’s statewide assessments in English language arts and mathematics, Algebra I and English II.

There are no exit exams required for graduation in Mississippi. Yet there seems to be confusion or simply mis-information that continues to persist around this topic. I’m hopeful this information will provide clarity around the issue of end-of-course assessments in high school.
