State Board Seeks Two High School Students to Serve as Advisors for 2019-20 School Year

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) is seeking applications from high school students who wish to serve as student representatives to the State Board starting in the 2019-20 school year. Student representatives will be non-voting members but will provide input on policy decisions that affect Mississippi public schools.

MDE Seeks Sponsors for 2019 Summer Food Service Program

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is seeking sponsors to operate the 2019 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) in counties across the state of Mississippi. The Summer Food Service Program, administered by the Office of Child Nutrition (OCN), provides nutritious meals to children without regard to race, color, national origin, age (within statutory limits), sex, or disability during summer school vacation periods.

MDE Announces 3rd Annual “Celebration of Excellence” Tour to Recognize District Achievements

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) announced a schedule of visits to recognize the achievements of all A districts. District leaders and school board members will join Dr. Carey Wright, state superintendent of education, at each location to thank teachers and students for their hard work.

Statewide, the number of districts earning an A increased from 15 in 2016-17 to 18 2017-18. Also, the number of schools earning an A rose from 114 in 2016-17 to 181 in 2017-18.

State Board Votes to Assign Grades to Corinth and Special Schools

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release:  November 8, 2018

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) today voted to assign unofficial letter grades for the 2017-18 school year to four schools that serve students with disabilities and the Corinth School District. The schools and district had not received grades in previous years.

State and federal law mandate that all schools and districts be evaluated using a single accountability system. There are no exclusions for schools with special populations.
