Achievement School District Community Meetings Set for Humphreys County and Yazoo City

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: May 6, 2019

Achievement School District Superintendent Jermall Wright, Ed.D., will meet with members of the Humphreys County community on May 8 and the Yazoo City community on May 15. Wright will take questions and provide information about the Humphreys County and Yazoo City school districts’ transition to the Achievement School District (ASD).

MDE Updating Teacher Pay Raise Total

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is working with every school district in the state to verify the total number of MAEP-funded teachers and teacher assistants to update the cost of the teacher pay raise. Once finalized, the MDE will provide this information to lawmakers and work with them to obtain the additional funding for the pay raise. 

The National Center for Teacher Residencies, Mississippi to Develop the Nation’s First State-Operated Teacher Residency

JACKSON, Miss. – The National Center for Teacher Residencies has received a $649,366 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to support the Mississippi Department of Education in the development of the nation’s first state-run teacher residency. The grant will also fund strategies to better recruit and retain African-American male teachers and provide support to teachers pursuing National Board Certification.

2018 State of Preschool Report Recognizes Mississippi as One of Top States for High-Quality Pre-K

JACKSON, Miss – The National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) recognized Mississippi in its latest report on pre-K quality as one of only nine states whose publicly funded pre-K program meets the majority of NIEER’s quality standards for early childhood education.

The latest ranking is published in the NIEER report, The State of Preschool 2018. The annual report tracks state-funded preschool access, resources and quality.

State Board of Education Selects Humphreys County and Yazoo City School Districts for Achievement School District

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) voted today to place the Humphreys County and Yazoo City school districts in the state’s first Achievement School District, which will launch in the 2019-20 school year.

MDE Announces 2019 Mississippi Administrator, Teacher of the Year

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) and the Office of Teaching and Leading today announced that, Dr. Lee Pambianchi, principal of Northshore Elementary in the Rankin County School District, has been selected as the 2019 Mississippi Administrator of the Year (MAOY), and Hannah Gadd, 6th – 12th grade choir director and music appreciation teacher at Lafayette High School in the Lafayette School District, has been selected as the 2019 Mississippi Teacher of the Year (MTOY).
