MDE Announces New Members of the Mississippi Teacher Council

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: August 5, 2019

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education announced today the addition of nearly 200 experienced and highly regarded professionals from across the state to serve on the Mississippi Teacher Council (MTC). The MTC, formed in 2016, now has 381 educators representing schools across the state, including the 181 added this school year.

MDE Finalizes Teacher Pay Raise Total

JACKSON, Miss – In consultation with school districts, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) has determined that 40,991 teachers and teacher assistants are eligible for the state-funded, $1,500 pay raise. 

The number of teaching positions is an increase from the original estimate of 31,157. The additional cost of the teacher pay raise is $18.5 million.  

SBE Approves Extension of First-year Special Non-Renewable Licenses for Certain Prospective Alternate Route Candidates

JACKSON, Miss. – Based on a recommendation by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), the Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) approved today a temporary license extension for certain prospective teacher candidates whose first-year special non-renewable license expired.

Kindergarteners, Pre-K Students Make Significant Gains on Statewide Assessment

JACKSON, Miss. – The results of Mississippi’s statewide assessment of learning in pre-K and kindergarten show the majority of the state’s youngest students continue to make significant gains during the academic year. 

Kindergarteners take a Kindergarten Readiness Assessment in the fall and spring of each school year. In fall 2018, 36.9% of students scored kindergarten ready. When kindergarteners were retested in the spring of 2019, 65.6% of students met the end-of-year target score.

MDE to Host Literacy Summit Sept. 13-14 for Parents, Educators, Community Partners and Policy Makers

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) will host a two-day literacy summit Sept. 13-14 for parents, guardians, educators, community partners, and policy makers to support efforts to improve student achievement. 

The theme for the summit is “A Shared Commitment to Literacy: Improving Literacy Outcomes for ALL from Birth to the Workforce.”

MDE Awards Three Universities $1.7 Million to Help Prepare New Teachers

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) recently awarded a $1.7 million, three-year grant to three universities that will help prepare and support highly effective new teachers for high-need school districts. The partnership is part of the Mississippi Teacher Residency Program.
