Mississippi Students Increase Advanced Placement Participation and Performance

JACKSON, Miss. – Close to 23% of Mississippi public students in the graduating class of 2019 took an Advanced Placement (AP) exam during high school, according to the College Board’s AP Cohort Data Report for Class of 2019 issued today. The participation rate is a slight increase (+0.4%) from the class of 2018.  

Mississippi Students Selected as Candidates for U.S. Presidential Scholars

Students that have been selected as candidates have an opportunity to become one of the 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars.  The scholars represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in young people.

SBE Votes to Keep U.S. History End-of-Course Assessment

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) voted unanimously today to keep the U.S. History end-of-course assessment.

The SBE’s final decision on the end-of-course assessment comes after a public comment period and review of an Accountability Task Force (ATF) recommendation. In November, the SBE asked for information from the ATF on how the possible elimination of the U.S. History assessment would impact the Mississippi Statewide Accountability System.

Mississippi’s Graduation Rate Exceeds National Average

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) released today the high school graduation rates for the 2018-19 school year, which show the state’s graduation rate has hit an all-time high of 85%, higher than the most recent national graduation rate. The 2019 national graduation rate is expected to be released later this month.

The graduation rate for students with disabilities nearly doubled from 23.2% in 2014 to 42.2% this year.
