State Board Approves Oxford School District as Newest District of Innovation

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release:  March 28, 2019

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) today approved plans for the Oxford School District to become Mississippi’s newest District of Innovation, bringing the total number of Districts of Innovation to eight.

The Oxford School District innovation plan includes a modified district calendar, a middle college program, a career academy, a personalized education pathway counseling program, and a comprehensive professional development program for teachers.  

MDE Adds New Features to Interactive Online Report Card to Help Families, Communities Evaluate Schools

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) added today three new components to the Mississippi Succeeds Report Card, an interactive online tool designed to help parents and communities more easily evaluate schools across the state. The new components include discipline data from the Office of Civil Rights, school-level per-pupil expenditure data, and additional student group data.

State Board Selects Semifinalists for State Board Student Representative Program

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) has selected 11 semifinalists for the SBE student representative program, which will begin in the 2019-20 school year.

Student representatives will be non-voting members but will provide input on policy decisions that affect Mississippi public schools.

MDE Invites Applicants for New Mississippi Teacher Residency Program

JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) invites aspiring teachers to apply for the new Mississippi Teacher Residency (MTR), which is a two-year program that combines coursework and on-the-job training to prepare 35 prospective educators for the teaching profession. Applications for the 2019-20 school year will be accepted from February 15 through March 15, 2019.
