Four Mississippi Schools Named 2021 National Blue Ribbon Schools

NEWS RELEASE 

For Immediate Release:  September 21, 2021

JACKSON, Miss. – The U.S. Department of Education today recognized four Mississippi schools among the 325 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2021. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

The following Mississippi schools were recognized:

State Board of Education to Hold Special-Called Teleconference Meeting

WHO: Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE)

WHAT: The SBE will hold a special-called teleconference meeting to consider approval for emergency procurements for Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds, American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds, and Mississippi Student Information Systems (MSIS) state funds to deliver systems and supports to school districts in response to COVID-19.

Nominate a Mississippi Teacher for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

The award is the highest honor the United States gives to teachers of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

MDE Announces New Members of the Mississippi Teacher Advisory Council

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) announced today the addition of 49 experienced and highly regarded professionals from across the state to serve on the Mississippi Teacher Advisory Council (MTAC). The MTAC, formed in 2016, now includes 300 educators representing schools in urban and rural settings and an array of content areas, including general education, arts, special education and career and technical education.

Seven Mississippi Schools Designated State’s First Science of Reading Schools

JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) has designated seven elementary schools as the state’s first Mississippi Emerging Science of Reading Schools (SoR). This recognition is for schools that have trained teachers in the science of reading, exemplified a change of instructional practices, and embodied a school culture that focuses on building skillful, strong readers in kindergarten through grade 3.
